Becoming a Recruiter
By Silas Reed
A Recruiter is a very important position in any company. He/she is responsible for recruiting the right personnel for the organization and seeing to it that the best and most capable personnel available in the job market are selected for a specific position. The Recruiter ensures that the right person is secured for the right job.

The recruiter in any organization looks after the entire recruitment process. This job will entails a lot of traveling. The recruiter is supposed to travel to campuses of various colleges in search of promising candidates. The recruitment process has several steps and the recruiter has to take care of all the steps both efficiently and effectively. The first step is to zero in on the requirements of personnel and that has to be matched with the vacancies within the organization. Then suitable candidates are searched for. The search can be both in terms of visiting college campus and in terms of advertisements. After gathering the initial pool of applicants, the recruiter screens the Resume to shortlist the prospective employees. Once the candidates are shortlisted, the selection begins. Selection is again divided into various steps depending on the job profile and number and nature of applicants. The recruiter is not only supposed to oversee the entire selection process, but also become an integral part of the process by extending his/her services to make the effort a successful one. The selection of a candidate might be through a written test. In that case, the recruiter gets in touch with concerned people and with their help prepares a question paper. He/she may even devise a psychometric test. But the test is conducted by the recruiter. Successful candidates are then interviewed by the recruiter. During the interview, he/she may seek the assistance of experts in that specific domain for the selection to be made. On selection the final stages of the recruitment process are also executed by the recruiter. The final reference checks also come under the purview of the job of a recruiter. The appointment letter is handed over to successful candidates by him/her and the Induction process is initiated by him/her.

The basic academic qualification that a recruiter should possess is a degree in Human Resources or Business Management with specialization in Human Resources. But the allied qualifications are many and varied. The incumbent could have a background of social or behavioral sciences. A degree pertaining to Employment Law or Labor Law will surely increase the prospects of taking better decisions. A degree in some other technical field may help make one a technical recruiter.

A good understanding of human psychology is the first and foremost skill that a recruiter must possess. He/she should have excellent communication skills. Good negotiating skills will be an added advantage. A good understanding of the laws related to recruitment is very essential. Laws regarding business or workplace, employee rights, labor laws and affirmative action laws should also be known by the incumbent. He/she should have an eye for nuance to shortlist resumes effectively.

The training required by a recruiter starts with the degree he/she acquires in college. The degree in Human Resources and/or behavioral sciences helps a person understand the entire recruitment process theoretically. Some practical training as to how to conduct the entire recruitment process is also required. A basic training in law related to recruiting is needed to gain some insight into the job. In depth knowledge of the field of work must also be acquired for selecting the right candidates and understanding the priorities of the position for which the recruitment process is being initiated properly.

Previous work experience in a similar field or related job works as an added factor in a resume. In addition to that, the experienced candidate takes no time in adjusting the new job and he is much aware of his responsibilities and duties.

The career graph of a recruiter can witness a steep rise very fast provided he/she gains expertise in the job. The job is actually very enriching and can turn out to be a checkered experience since it involves dealing with people and conducting interviews very often. An expert will always be in demand and a sincere employee in this designation can expect to be promoted to the position of HR Manager and eventually HR Director.

A recruiter can earn a handsome salary. But it entirely depends on the expertise of the person. The average salary of a recruiter ranges in between $35,500 to $55,750.

The job of a recruiter is indeed a very challenging one. The growth prospects are high and so is the salary. Anyone who wishes to become a successful recruiter should be aware of the prevailing conditions of the labor market and understand human beings well in order to make correct selections.
